Gambiered Canton Silk – The “Soft Gold” of Silk

Gambiered Canton Silk, also known as XiangYunSha (in Chinese), is one of China’s most unique traditional silk fabrics. Made from mulberry silk, it is naturally dyed and finished using plant dye and river mud.

Originating in ShunDe, Guangdong province, this traditional craftsmanship has been recognized as a Chinese National Geographical Indication product and a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A Silk with Centuries of History

The tradition dates back hundreds of years. Artisans originally used plant-based dye from the shu-liang vine to make silk more durable and water-resistant. Later, they developed the distinctive river-mud finishing process, which gives Gambier Canton Silk its deep black surface and characteristic texture.

The fabric became highly valued in China and was also exported internationally, particularly during the late Qing Dynasty and early 20th century.

Authentic Gambiered Canton Silk is traditionally produced through repeated soaking, boiling, sun-drying, mud coating, and washing. The process can take several months and depends heavily on sunlight, weather, natural plant dyes, and the skill of experienced artisans.

This traditional process gives each piece its own unique color, texture, and natural pattern.
